The Periodic Table:
The Arrangement of elements in the periodic table is based  on the order of increasing atomic numer. They go from left to right, top to bottom. (The atomic number is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus.) Elements with the same number of valence electrons are placed vertically in the same group. There are 8 groups in the periodic table, numbered from left to right. Some groups have their own names:

               -Group 1 / Alkali Metals

               -Group 2 / Alkali Earth Metals

               -Group 7 / Halogens

               -Group 8 or 0 / Noble Gases

Elements with the same outer shell of valence electrons are placed horizontally in the same period. The transition elements are located between groups 2 and 3.
